HOME  PETITION  FEEDBACK  DISCLAIMER

Welcome to the site where people gather to show opposition to
unacceptable amounts of truck traffic on route 234 through rural York
and Adams counties.

10 reasons why Route 234 is not a good truck route...

Air Quality

There are many adverse health effects associated with diesel exhaust exposure.

  • Asthma symptoms have been positively linked to truck exhaust (Duhme and Weiland, 1996).
  • The proximity of schools to freeways and major truck routes is significantly associated with chronic respiratory symptoms in children (Speizer and Ferris, 1973).
  • Children admitted to hospital with an asthma diagnosis are significantly more likely to live in an area with high truck traffic (Edwards, Walters, et. al, 1994).
  • Children living near major diesel throughfares are more likely to suffer from reduced lung function (Brunekreef, et. al., 1997).
  • Particulates in diesel exhaust bind to pollen in the air, exacerbating allergies and asthma (Knox, et. al. 1997).
  • EPA has found that exposure to diesel exhaust, even at low levels, is likely to pose a risk of lung cancer, as well as other respiratory risks (EPA Report, 1996)

Noise Pollution

General truck acceleration and deceleration make having a conversation on the sidewalk or at one of the various outdoor dining venues almost impossible.

Don't even get us started on Jake brakes.

Road Wear

"They're country roads. They're not designed and built for large
volumes of traffic." A quote from Biglerville Council Member Dick
Mountfort reprinted by permission of the York Dailey Record/York
Sunday News from the article "Growing pains: Trucks shatter windows,
quiet."

Trucks and Bicycles

Are not a good combination.

Too many Hills and Curves

Most of the fatal crashes involving large trucks occur in rural areas (67 percent), during the day (68 percent) and on weekdays (80 percent).

One gentleman from Adams County told us he is uncomfortable meeting up with trucks on tight curves particularly after dark.

Pedestrian Crosswalk Danger

A picture is worth a thousand words. (Taken in East Berlin along Route
234 where the speed limit is 35MPH) 35MPH is too
fast for heavy trucks traveling in areas posted with pedestrian crosswalks. The
borough council of East Berlin has requested a speed limit reduction
from PennDot on two different occasions without success.
"Short term relief could come from better managing traffic on existing
roads and slowing it down." A quote from Richard Schmoyer, planning
and development director for Adams County. Reprinted by permission of

quiet."

Historic Preservation

Significant historic structures abound along Route 234. Many of these buildings have been restored and maintained through the ongoing commitments by volunteers in grassroots organizations. This vibrant enthusiasm for saving our past should in no way be squelched by the constant rumble of big rigs.
